I’m hardly a connoisseur of the genre, but I remember The Others as being quite good and scary, albeit in the quiet way that relies on an ominous atmosphere and the fear of the unknown rather than a high body count. If you’re looking for something in the vein of, say, Halloween or Scream, that’s not the kind of horror The Others is.

from a quick google search, I think The Others looks good. I’m not really sure what kind of movies my friends are looking for, but ominous atmosphere and fear of the unknown sounds pretty good, and pretty much what we’re looking for.
